Rumor has it that Charles Otto McFarrin changed the spelling of his last name to "McFerrin" to get rid of a problem with a pesky bill collector trying to collect someone elses debt owed by a McFerron. Rumor source: Paul R. McFerrin as told by his brother Albert. We have no idea whether this name change was done legally or not. Charles birth certificate has his spelling as McFarrin. Census records for Ohio & Kentucky has the spelling of McFerrin.

I think given this conflict of information as to the correct spelling of McFerrin, the name change is very questionable. It is true that history has made several spelling errors of the McFerrin. Some persons writing down the name did not know exactly how it was spelled or the person envolved really was not aware of the importance of correct spelling in the current generation. We just have to live with these errors.

Albert McFerrin, 72 of 501 S. Lock St. Waverly, died at 8:15 pm Wednesday in Medical Center Hospital after an extended illness.

Mr. McFerrin retired in 1976 as an accountant for District 9 of the Ohio Department of Transportation after 37 years of service. He was an elder of the Waverly First Presbyterian Church where his funeral will be held at 1 pm Saturday. The Rev. Lowell Simms will officiate and burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Botkin Funeral Home, Waverly, 2-4 and 6-8 pm Friday. A native of Chillicothe, he was born May 10, 1906 to Charles O. and Alice Watson McFerrin. On March 20, 1949, he was married to the former Janet Sautter who survives.

Also surviving are a stepson, Fred Hughes, Beavercreek; four grandchildren; two brothers, Charles E. and Paul, Chillicothe; and two sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Addie) Curry and Mrs. Karl (Hazel) Mount, Chillicothe. He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters, and a brother.

At the Presbyterian Church, Mr. McFerrin was a former Sunday School superintendent and teacher.

A charter member of the Waverly Lions Club, he was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting and was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 76, Waverly.

He was a past president of the Lake White Little Theater and a past president of the Waverly YMCA. Memorial tributes may be made to the memorial funds of the Waverly First Presbyterian Church or the Waverly Lions Club.
