A wet sheet and a
flowing sea,
A wind that follows fast,
And fills the white and rustling sail,
And bends the gallant mast.
And bends the gallant mast, my boys,
While like the eagle free
Away the good ship flies, and leaves
Old England on the lee.
Allan Cunningham
Buying a boat
How to Decide if Buying an Older Boat
is Right for You - Food for thought before you purchase that used boat. One of the
things that I did when I purchased Wisp was to have her surveyed. The survey was
reasonably priced and gave me a clear picture of her condition.

perfect silence is,
Seen it in the wild blue off Hatteras,
A mile out, rainbowed sails in silent bliss,

I must go down to the
seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking

There is
nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing
as simply messing about in boats.
In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter.
Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it.
Whether you get away, or whether you don't;
whether you arrive at your destination
or whether you reach somewhere else,
or whether you never get anywhere at all,
you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular;
and when you've done it there's always something else to do,
and you can do it if you like,
but you'd much better not.

West Wight Potter Sites
In the July, 1999 issue, Cruising World Magazine wrote of the West Wight Potter 15 foot sailboat as "a springy-sheared cockleshell of a cruiser that's only 15 feet long. Its diminutive size hasn't held it back from becoming one of the all-time favorite mini-cruisers, and thousands of these boats have been made and are still sailing today." (I am not sure what "springy-sheared cockleshell" means, but it sure sounds salty to me!) They also say that the 15 foot Potter stuffs basic sleeping and other amenities into an eccentric 15-foot hull topped with a saucy sheer and a high roach mainsail." The 19-foot Potter is described as the "biggest boat of this group (under $10,000) and, although she feels an order of magnitude larger than her sister, can still be trailed behind a compact car."

Got out of town on a
boat goin' to southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete Bay...
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day
So I'm sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a dyin'.....

The sail, the
play of its pulse so like our own lives:
so thin and yet so full of life, so noiseless when it labors hardest,
so noisy and impatient when least effective.

we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against the it,
