Wonderful New England...

As the days take on a mellower light, and the apple at last hangs
really finish'd and indolent-ripe on the tree,
Then for the teeming quietest, happiest days of all!
The brooding and blissful halcyon days.
Walt Whitman

Fall is the most beautiful time of year in Connecticut. This is a picture of a pond in Vernon, Connecticut. It is a great time for "leaf peeping".

Vacation in Maine...

Maine is a wonderful vacation state. In June, 2000, we took a long weekend in Bar Harbor and stayed at the Inn at Bar Harbor. The picture below is the view from our room. We sailed one evening on the four-masted schooner, Molly Todd.

Ayuh... In August for several years, Dorothy and I went to The Inn at Poland Springs near Portland, Maine. It was wonderful. It was one of those rare times when we were able to relax. We spent time by the pool, had ice cream sodas, made the pilgrimage to LL Bean's in Freeport (worse than Macy's at Christmas! The one in Portland is just as good and not mobbed.), went on a paddle wheel boat for a tour of Long Lake north of Lake Sebago. We made reservations for next year.

The accommodations are nice, but not fancy. You have to bring your own towels and soap. The price includes two meals a day - basic, good, and filling - I usually got seconds. There is an 18 hole golf course for golfers, and badminton, shuffleboard, boules (bocci), a practice putting green and more. There is weekday entertainment which was fun and quite good.

Here are a few pictures:

An evening concert in the gazebo.
Caught in mid-air! Swimming in 50,000 gallons of pure spring water that would cost a dollar for an eight ounce bottle. The pool was never over-populated and we frequently had it to ourselves.

"Take out your map and look at it. See what a real corner of the world it occupies; how it stands there away off shore.... Look at it -- a mere hillock, an elbow of sand; all beach, without a background."
--Herman Melville, Moby Dick
