Classic Connecticut

Fall is the most beautiful time of year in Connecticut. This is a picture of a pond in Vernon, Connecticut. It is a great time for "leaf peeping".

Connecticut is a surprising state. It is located between Boston and New York. It is a fairly urban state and yet, there are many miles of wonderful hiking trails where you can walk all afternoon and not see a soul. The Connecticut River continues to get cleaner and more beautiful each year. It is an industrial state. A good number of companies either have manufacturing plants or corporate headquarters here. Connecticut is still home to many large insurance companies. It is located on the Long Island Sound. Connecticut is the birthplace and home of many of the Navy's submarines. The first helicopter was built here.  Connecticut is the home of many celebrities including Paul Newman, Joann Woodward, Meryl Streep, David Letterman, Katherine Hepburn, Mia Farrow, and Woody Allen. It has a nice university in New Haven (Yale), a large state university (UConn), a good number of other colleges and universities, and college preparatory schools (Loomis-Chaffee, Taft). Such authors as Noah Webster, Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in Connecticut.

As this page develops, I will try to paint a picture of Connecticut. It is more than what one sees in such movies as Christmas in Connecticut, but that is certainly part of the heritage. Connecticut is a state that is changing in character. The world's largest casino is located here. Manufacturing has declined and companies have moved to less expensive areas. It is still a state that is steeped with many traditional values and has a yuppie quality about it.

The Charles W. Morgan whaling ship at Mystic Seaport....

I moved to Manchester, Connecticut when I was about 4. I grew up here, went to Loomis, a prep school for a year, and graduated from Manchester High School in 1966. I never dreamed that I would return here, much less teach in the town where I grew up.

Take a virtual tour of some of the historic and interesting places in Litchfield County in the northwest corner of Connecticut. Carol Hanny does a superb job of describing some of the most interesting and unusual places in this area. Her photos are excellent. Visit Megaliths, caves and other interesting stuff! She also has links to the towns in this part of the state. I especially enjoyed the story of the Leatherman and the many pictures on her pages.

Lovely gardens... We live near Elizabeth Park. It has one of the loveliest rose gardens in the United States.

Connecticut has some wonderful lighthouses. Wisp frequently sails around the Latimer Reef Lighthouse between Mystic and Fishers Island. Visit Connecticut Lighthouses.

A city whose fame as an insurance center has extended to all lands and given us the name of being a quadruple band of brothers working sweetly hand in hand -- the Colt's Arms Company making the destruction of our race easy and convenient, our life insurance citizens paying for the victims when they pass away, Mr. Batterson perpetuating their memory with his stately monuments, and our fire insurance companies taking care of their hereafter.

Essex is one of my favorite Connecticut towns. It is near the mouth of the
Connecticut River. Katherine Hepburn lives there. Did you ever wonder
where Witch Hazel is made? This is also the home of Clark Sails who
made Wisp's new sails.
