Never look down on anyone unless you are helping him up.
Rev. Jesse Jackson

This is a very special page to me. I believe that we have an obligation to leave the world a better place having given a bit more than we have taken. We each do this in our own special way. Some ways that we can do this is by donating money, time, or caring. Sometimes the smallest gifts mean the most. Send a card or note to a friend - write it by hand rather than sending an ecard. Call or visit someone. Give someone in  need a surprise. Most of us are blessed with tremendous affluence. We should share it. Find something to do in your own community.

Be excellent to each other.

Here are some groups or organizations that I like. Some I contribute to, others I wish that I could.

When one begins to purposefully perform acts of kindness,
the spirit changes and soon doing good deeds becomes a focal point for our life;
doing good begins to be the same as feeling good.
The periods of emptiness when we search for the "meaning of it all"
begin to fill with acts of kindness.

The Salvation Army exemplifies the highest ideals of service. They gladly work with those who, in many ways are society's untouchables. Their mission is worldwide. They do so much besides stand by the red kettle at Christmas time. When Dorothy and I were in India, we stayed at a Red Shield Guest House in Calcutta.

The only true gift is a portion of yourself.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization which has a well-established heritage of promoting peace, social justice, and humanitarian concern. They believe in the value of every person and the power of  love to overcome violence and injustice.

Let there be work, bread, water and salt for all.
Nelson Mandela

The Unitarian-Universalist Service Committee is a UU organization that works directly with local groups to protect human rights - especially those of indigenous people, the poor, and the disempowered. In the United States, the UUSC is particularly active in various child advocacy projects.

No man is an island entire unto itself;
every man is a piece of the continent,
a part of the main...
Any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
it tolls for thee.
John Donne
