We have lived and loved together
Through many changing years;
We have shared each other's gladness,
And wept each other's tears.
Charles Jeffreys

Dorothy grew up outside of Pittsburgh in Coraopolis, PA. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was an elementary school art teacher. She has such fond memories of her childhood... She tells stories about a closet which was her fantastic New York apartment, and of the closeness of the neighborhood on Oakhaven drive. She is the middle of three sisters. The oldest is Marilyn who lives in the North Shore area of Boston. The youngest is Janet who lives in a coastal town in North Carolina. She tells of her dog, Nipper. She attended several colleges before she went to Penn State, home of the Nittany Lions, in "Happy Valley". She majored in Family Studies at Penn State and grew to love child and human development. After college, she took a teaching job in Willimantic, CT. (This happened to be the town where I was going to college!) Dorothy had resigned her position with the idea of traveling around the world alone. I had decided that I was going to do the same. One day, I was talking to a friend whom I thought had been to Israel. She hadn't, but she told me that I had to meet Dorothy. I am sure glad I did. I talked Dorothy into going around the world my way - west to east. She agreed to travel with me. We went to Pittsburgh to meet her parents. I left Connecticut a month later and hitched to Vancouver, BC. She flew there and we started our journey around the planet earth. We were married several months after we got back in the US on November 27, 1971.

After we were married, Dorothy became an EPDA fellow and began her graduate studies at the University of Connecticut. She finished her MA in Education with an emphasis in Child Development. She then went on to complete a Ph.D. in Education. She studied Technical and Industrial Education and took coursework in Higher Education Administration and Curriculum Development. Her skill area was statistics.
One of our first vacations was to Newfoundland, Canada. We drove her lovely blue Plymouth Satellite and camped or stayed in hostels. We visited the only French possession in North America, St. Pierre and Miquelon. They were two tiny islands off the Newfoundland coast, but were VERY French. We started our return trip back to the ferry to go from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia when we found out that the ferry and train system were going on strike. We missed the last ferry and were stuck on Newfoundland. I was starting a new job in just a few days, so I had to get back. We decided that Dorothy would stay with the car while I would hitch to the local airport, fly to the mainland and hitch home. I gave Dorothy what little cash I had. She worked with the Newfies, as they call themselves, to help feed all these stranded tourists and truckers. The strike ended about ten days later, and she returned safely. (I made it to my new job on time too!)
| Alas! the road to Anywhere is
pitfalled with disaster; There's hunger, want, and weariness, yet O we loved it so! As on we tramped exultantly, and no man was our master, And no man guessed what dreams were ours, as swinging heel and toe We tramped the road to Anywhere, the magic road to Anywhere, The tragic road to Anywhere, such dear, dim years ago. Dorothy has been a professor at St. Joseph College. Her specialties are in the areas of human development and educational psychology. She has always been interested in brain functioning and cognition. She is a superb teacher. She required that her students use the computer which many professors still don't. She does excellent and creative PowerPoint presentations and weaves Internet assignments into her classes better than anyone I know.
You're in my heart, you're in my soul
You'll be my breath should I grow old
You are my lover, you're my best friend
You're in my soul

Dorothy likes to travel. She enjoys company and has prepared extravagant meals for holiday feasts. One Christmas dinner, the feast included: alligator, boar, ostrich, pheasant, goose, and more! She took a hot-air balloon ride with a friend who had just completed her doctorate two years ago. Even though she doesn't like heights, she loved the balloon.
High in the Connecticut skies.

Dorothy has an adventuresome and a playful side to her personality. She enjoys doing many different things and orchestrates terrific celebrations. Her parties range from a pig roast at Bigelow Hollow State Park in Connecticut to an elegant champagne and hors d'ouvres reception at the Mark Twain House in Hartford. She also planned a birthday weekend for me in Paris!
May you always remember
These moments are shared by few
And those harbor lights, lord, they're coming into
view
We'll bid our farewells much too soon
So drink it up, this one's for you
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise

Dorothy spent a week in Bali in January and was totally spoiled by the wonderful hotel, warm climate, and friendly people. We went to Italy in March, 1999. She went to China to study their educational system and family structure. Dorothy loves to travel!
And there's that one particular harbor
Sheltered from the wind
Where the children play on the shore each day
And all are safe within

Dorothy just started a new job in August, 2000. She is the Dean of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions at the University of Hartford. They are certainly lucky to have her. The job is filled with many challenges, but she is enjoying it.
