Mouse Commands

 

The mouse is a type of input device. You can use the mouse to move the cursor (pointer or I-beam), select from a menu, highlight a block of text, or move an object.

POINT- Move the mouse so that the arrow pointer is on the desired menu name, command name, graphic item, or place the I-beam where you want the insertion point.

CLICK - Quickly press the left button of the mouse one time. CLICKing is used to reposition the insertion point in text, select a menu, or select an option from a dialog box.

RIGHT CLICK - CLICK the right button instead of the left button. This displays a context sensitive menu.

DOUBLE CLICK - Rapidly press the left button twice. DOUBLE CLICKing on an icon or file name opens an application or window related to that icon.

CLICK and DRAG or DRAG and DROP or DRAG SELECT - Keep the left mouse button depressed. Move the pointer to the new position and release. This command is used to move text, files, etc. and may be used in conjunction with other keys.

SHIFT+CLICK - Press and hold the SHIFT key as you press the left mouse button. SHIFT+CLICKing selects multiple adjoining file names in the file manager or text between the current insertion point and the place where you press SHIFT+CLICK.

CONTROL+CLICK - Press and hold the CONTROL key as you press the left mouse button. CONTROL+CLICKing selects multiple file names in the file manager. The files do not have to be adjoining.

ALT+CLICK - Press and hold the ALT key as you press the left mouse button. ALT+CLICKing moves selected file(s) in the Explorer.


Using the Start Button and Start Menu

  1. Move the pointer to the Start Button.
  2. CLICK.
  3. Move the pointer up on the Start Menu.
  4. Select the desired menu option and CLICK.

or

  1. Move the pointer to the Start Button.
  2. CLICK.
  3. Move the pointer up on the Start Menu to the menu option.
  4. Move the pointer directly to the right on the right arrow to select a submenu.
  5. CLICK on the desired menu option or select another submenu.
    NOTE: Additional submenus may appear on the right or left side of the menu.

When you start a program, the program’s name appears on the Taskbar.

 

Exercise 1 Starting WordPad.

  1. CLICK on Start.
  2. Move the pointer to Programs.
  3. Go to the submenu on the right.
  4. Move the pointer to Accessories.
  5. CLICK on WordPad.

Shutting Down

CAUTION: It is very important to shut down your computer properly.

  1. Move the pointer to the Start Button.
  2. CLICK.
  3. Select Shut Down.
  4. Select YES in the Shut Down Windows dialog box.
  5. Turn off the computer when prompted. NOTE: Some computers have power management systems and do not need to be turned off.

Window Basics

Sizing a Window -

 

Moving a Window - CLICK and drag on the Title Bar of a restored window. You cannot move a minimized or maximized window.

 

Switching between Multiple Windows - CLICK on a window. That window will become the active window. NOTE: You can only work in the active window. The active window will be in the foreground and have a highlighted Title Bar. Inactive windows will be in the background and have a gray Title Bar.

 

Arranging Windows - Move the pointer to a blank area on the Taskbar. Right-CLICK. Select Cascade, Tile Horizontally, or Tile Vertically. To clear your desktop without closing any applications, select Minimize All Windows. To use an application, CLICK on its title on the Taskbar.

 

Closing a Window - Move your point to the Close Icon (the X) in the upper right-hand corner of the window and CLICK. If you have worked on an application or made changes in a document, you will be asked if you want to save the changes.


Getting Help

From the Desktop:

  1. CLICK on Start.
  2. Move the pointer to Help.
  3. CLICK on Help.

    Contents: Lists the contents of the help document.

    Find: Searches Help for relevant topics.

    Index: Allows you to search the index for topics.

  4. CLICK on the topic to select it. After you have selected the topic, CLICK on Display at the bottom of the Help dialog box

In a Properties Box:

  1. CLICK on the ? located in the upper right-hand corner of the window.
  2. Move the ? pointer to the place about which you have a question.
  3. CLICK.

In an Application:

  1. CLICK on Help on the Menu Bar.
  2. Or Press ALT H.
  3. Or Press F1.

    NOTE: You can use the vertical scroll bar to see the various topics. CLICK on the up or down button at the top or bottom of the scroll bar or CLICK and drag on the scroll box.


    WordPad

    Entering text:

    Type the text. Do not press the ENTER key unless you want to end a short line, start a new paragraph, or skip lines.

    Editing text:

    Move the insertion point to the location where you want to add, delete, or change text.

    Press DELETE to erase the character to the right of the insertion point.

    Press BACKSPACE to erase the character to the left of the insertion point.

    Press the INSERT key to change from the insert mode to the overstrike mode.

    Replacing text - Mark the text and retype. As you type the old text will be replaced with the new text.

    Moving Text (Cut and Paste) - Select the text. Cut. Move the insertion point. Paste.

    Copying Text (Copy and Paste) - Select the text. Copy. Move the insertion point. Paste.

    Formatting Text

    Font - Type style. All Windows’ fonts are available in any program.

    Size - Given in "points". Normally 10 or 12 point.

    To change the format, you can use:

    • Menu - Format Fonts
    • Right Mouse button
    • Formatting Tool bar
    • CTRL key combinations for text enhancement:

    CTRL B - Bold

    CTRL I - Italicize

    CTRL U - Underline

    Alignment or Justification - CLICK on Alignment tool: Left, Center, or Right.

    Select text by CLICKing and Dragging or DOUBLE-CLICKing on a word.


    Saving and Opening Files

    Saving Files:

    Method 1. CLICK on File, Save on the menu bar. The first time you do this, you will see the Save As dialog box. Name your file. CLICK on OK. The next time you save your file, it will be saved by that name.

    Method 2. CLICK on the Save Tool on the toolbar. (It looks like a little disk.) The first time you do this, you will see the Save As dialog box. Name your file. CLICK on OK. The next time you save your file, it will be saved by that name.

     

    Opening files:

    Method 1. CLICK on File, Open on the menu bar. You will see the File Open dialog box. Find your file by changing the current disk or directory. CLICK on the file. CLICK on Open.

    Method 2. CLICK on the File Open Tool on the toolbar. (It looks like a little yellow file folder.) Find your file by changing the current disk or directory. CLICK on the file. CLICK on Open.


    My Computer

    To open My Computer, double CLICK on the icon.

    The objects inside represent the drives and other items which your computer is capable of using. These include disk drives, CD ROMs, printers, and networks.

    File - enables you to open, close, or change a file or folder.

    Working with Disks and Files

     

    Formatting a disk:

    1. CLICK on My Computer.
    2. CLICK on File.
    3. CLICK on Format…
    4. Select Quick to erase files.
      Select Full for a normal format.
      Select System Files Only - to create a system disk on a formatted disk.

    5. CLICK in the Label text box if you want to give your disk a label.
    6. Select No Label if you don’t want a label.

      Display Summary if you want to see the disk statistics.

      Copy System files to create a system disk.

    7. CLICK on Start.
    8. After the disk is formatted, you will see the Disk Summary. CLICK on Close.
    9. CLICK on Close to close the Format dialog box.

    Selecting a Single File:

    1. CLICK on My Computer.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK on the C: drive icon.
    3. Double on the folder which holds the file.
    4. CLICK on file.

    Selecting Adjacent Files:

    1. CLICK on My Computer.
    2. DOUBLE -CLICK on the C: drive icon.
    3. DOUBLE-CLICK on the folder which holds the file.
    4. CLICK on first file.
    5. Move the pointer down to the last file.
    6. Hold the SHIFT key down and CLICK (SHIFT-CLICK).

    Selecting Non-Adjacent Files:

    1. DOUBLE -CLICK on My Computer.
    2. DOUBLE -CLICK on the C: drive icon.
    3. Double on the folder which holds the file.
    4. CLICK on first file.
    5. Move the pointer down to the next file.
    6. Hold the CONTROL key down and CLICK (CONTROL-CLICK) on each file.

    NOTE: You can select both adjacent and non-adjacent files by combining the commands.

    Copying Files or a Folder - Copy/Paste:

    1. Select the file(s) or a folder.
    2. RIGHT-CLICK on the blue highlighted area.
    3. Select Copy.
    4. RIGHT -CLICK on the destination.
    5. Select Paste.

    NOTE: You can also copy a file/folder by CONTROL-CLICK and DRAGGING the object to its destination.

    Moving Files or a Folder - Cut/Paste:

    1. Select the file(s) or a folder.
    2. RIGHT -CLICK on the blue highlighted area.
    3. Select Cut.
    4. RIGHT -CLICK on the destination.
    5. Select Paste.

    NOTE: You can also move a file/folder by CLICKING and DRAGGING the object to its destination.

    Creating a New Folder:

    1. DOUBLE-CLICK My Computer.
    2. Select and display the contents of the drive or folder where you want to place the new folder.
    3. CLICK on File.
    4. Move the pointer down to New.
    5. Move the pointer over Folder and CLICK.
    6. The new folder appears with the temporary name NEW FOLDER.
    7. Type a new name for the folder and press ENTER.
    8. Copy or move files into the new folder.

    Create a New Folder on the Desktop:

    1. Move the pointer over an empty area on the desktop (the background area of your screen).
    2. RIGHT-CLICK.
    3. Select New.
    4. Move the pointer over Folder and CLICK.
    5. The new folder appears with the temporary name NEW FOLDER.
    6. Type a new name for the folder and press ENTER.
    7. Copy or move files into the new folder.

    Copying a File/Folder to a Floppy Disk:

    1. Select the file(s) or folder.
    2. RIGHT-CLICK on the blue highlighted area.
    3. Move the pointer to SEND TO…
    4. CLICK on 3½" Floppy A:.

    Renaming a File/Folder:

    1. Select the file(s) or folder.
    2. CLICK on File.
    3. CLICK on Rename.
    4. Type the new name - up to 250 characters. NOTE: To avoid problems use only letters, numbers, the underscore _, or a period. Some punctuation marks are not permitted.
    5. Press ENTER.

    Deleting a File:

    1. Select the file(s) or folder.
    2. Press DELETE on your keyboard.
    3. CLICK on Yes in the Confirm File Delete dialog box.

    Restoring a Deleted File/Folder:

    1. CLICK on the Recycle Bin icon on the Desktop.
    2. Select the file(s) or folder.
    3. CLICK on File.
    4. Move the pointer to Restore and CLICK.
    5. Close the Recycle Bin.

    Opening a File:

    1. Move the pointer over the file which you wish to open.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK or CLICK on File, Open.
    3. The file opens within the application with which it is associated.

    Opening a Recently Used File:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer over Documents.
    3. A list of recently used files appears.
    4. Move the pointer over the file you wish to open and CLICK.

    Opening a New Office Document:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. CLICK on New Office Document.
    3. CLICK on the tab of the type of document.
    4. CLICK on the document icon.
    5. CLICK on OK.
    6. The document or template opens within the appropriate application.

    Opening an Existing Office Document:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. CLICK on Open Office Document.
    3. Select the correct directory if necessary.
    4. Select the file.
    5. CLICK on Open.

    Printing a File:

    1. DOUBLE-CLICK on My Computer.
    2. DOUBLE -CLICK on the drive icon in which the file is located.
    3. CLICK on the file.
    4. CLICK on File.
    5. CLICK on Print.

    NOTE: When you send a file to the printer a small printer icon appears on the Taskbar by the time. When the print job has finished, the icon disappears.

    Viewing Files Sent to the Printer:

    1. Move the pointer over the printer icon on the Taskbar.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK.
    3. Close the printer status window by CLICKing on the close icon.

    Pausing the Printer:

    1. Move the pointer over the printer icon on the Taskbar.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK.
    3. CLICK on Printing.
    4. CLICK on Pause Printing.

    Canceling a Print Job:

    1. Move the pointer over the printer icon on the Taskbar.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK.
    3. CLICK on the file which you no longer wish to print.
    4. CLICK on Printing.
    5. CLICK on Pause Printing.

    Emptying the Recycling Bin:

    1. DOUBLE-CLICK on the Recycling Bin.
    2. CLICK on File.
    3. CLICK on Empty Recycling Bin.
    4. Confirm the deletion by CLICKing on Yes.

    Finding a File or Folder by Name:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer to Find.
    3. Move the pointer right to Files or Folders.
    4. Type all or part of the file or folder name in the Named text box.
    5. CLICK on the down arrow to the right of the Look-In list box.
    6. Select C:. NOTE: This will be your best choice for most searches.
    7. CLICK on the Find Now button to start the search.
    8. Files that match the search criteria will be listed.
    9. Open the file by DOUBLE-CLICKing on the file.

    Finding a File or Folder by Contents:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer to Find.
    3. Move the pointer right to Files or Folders.
    4. CLICK on Advanced.
    5. CLICK in the Containing Text text box.
    6. Type the text which is contained in the file.
    7. CLICK on the Find Now button to start the search.
    8. Files that match the search criteria will be listed.
    9. Open the file by DOUBLE-CLICKing on the file.

    Adding a Shortcut to the Desktop:

    1. Do DOUBLE-CLICK on My Computer.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK on the drive icon.
    3. DOUBLE-CLICK on the folder which contains the file.
    4. CLICK on the file to which you want to create the shortcut.
    5. CLICK on File.
    6. CLICK on Create Shortcut.
    7. CLICK and drag the shortcut icon from the drive folder to the Desktop.

    NOTE: When you no longer need the shortcut, you can delete it like any other object.


    The Explorer

    Starting Windows Explorer:

    1. RIGHT-CLICK on Start or move the pointer to Programs, directly to the right and CLICK on Windows Explorer.
    2. CLICK on the Maximize Icon to maximize the window.
    3. CLICK on the folder name on the left. The contents of the folder will be displayed on the right side of the screen.

     

    Expanding or Collapsing Folders:

    If a folder contains other folders, a + or - sign will be displayed to the left of the folder icon. CLICKing on the + sign will expand the folder to display folders contained within that folder. CLICKing on the - sign will hide those folders.

    Creating a New Folder:

    1. CLICK on the folder on the left in which you want place the new folder.
    2. CLICK on File.
    3. Move the pointer to New.
    4. Move the pointer to Folder. CLICK.
    5. The new folder appears with the temporary name (New Folder). Type the name for the new folder. Press ENTER.

    Copying a File to a Different Folder:

    1. RIGHT-CLICK on the file you wish to copy.
    2. Select Copy.
    3. RIGHT-CLICK on the folder in which you want to place the file.
    4. Select Paste.

    Moving a File to a Different Folder:

    1. RIGHT-CLICK on the file you wish to copy.
    2. Select Cut.
    3. RIGHT-CLICK on the folder in which you want to place the file.
    4. Select Paste.

    Deleting a File:

    1. CLICK on the folder which contains the file.
    2. CLICK on the file.
    3. Press DELETE.
    4. CLICK on Yes in the Confirm File Delete dialog box.

    Deleting a Folder:

    1. CLICK on the folder.
    2. Press DELETE.
    3. CLICK on Yes in the Confirm File Delete dialog box.

    Renaming a File or Folder:

    1. RIGHT-CLICK on the file or folder.
    2. CLICK on Rename.
    3. Type the new name.
    4. Press ENTER.

    Changing Windows Settings

    Setting the Date and Time:

    1. Move the pointer to the time displayed on the Taskbar in the lower-right corner of the screen.
    2. DOUBLE-CLICK on the time.
    3. CLICK on the down arrow to the right of the month list box. Select the month.
    4. CLICK on the up arrow to the right of the year to increment (increase) the year number or the down arrow to decrement (decrease) the year number.
    5. CLICK on the correct date to set the day and date.
    6. Move the pointer to the digital clock in the lower-right section of the window.
    7. DOUBLE-CLICK on the part of the time (hour, minute, or AM/PM) that you want to change. Type the correct setting or CLICK on the up or down arrow to the right of the clock.

    Adding or Changing the Wallpaper:

    1. Move the pointer to an empty area on the desktop.
    2. RIGHT-CLICK.
    3. CLICK on the Properties tab.
    4. CLICK on the wallpaper that you want in the wallpaper listing.
    5. CLICK on Tile.
    6. CLICK on OK.

    NOTE: To remove wallpaper, follow the same steps, except select None.

    Changing the Screen Color:

    1. Move the pointer to an empty area on the desktop.
    2. RIGHT-CLICK.
    3. CLICK on the Appearance tab.
    4. CLICK on the down arrow to the right of the Schemes list box to display the list of color schemes.
    5. CLICK on a color scheme. NOTE: You will see a preview of the color scheme in the area directly above the Scheme list box.
    6. CLICK on OK.

    NOTE: To return to the original color scheme, select Windows Standard.

    Installing a Screen Saver:

    1. Move the pointer to an empty area on the desktop.
    2. RIGHT-CLICK.
    3. CLICK on the Screen Saver tab.
    4. CLICK on the down arrow to the right of the Screen Saver list box to display the list of screen savers.
    5. CLICK on a screen saver.
    6. CLICK on Preview to preview the screen saver.
    7. CLICK on the up or down arrows to the right of Wait to increase or decrease the length of time that the computer must be inactive before the screen saver starts.
    8. CLICK on OK.

    NOTE: Avoid setting a password for a screen saver unless you need to do so. If you forget the password, you won’t be able use the computer.

    Changing Mouse Settings:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer to Settings.
    3. Move the pointer over to Control Panel and CLICK.
    4. DOUBLE-CLICK on the Mouse icon.

    By selecting the Buttons tab, you can change:
    The primary mouse button by CLICKing on Left-handed option button.
    The DOUBLE-CLICK speed by CLICKing on Double-CLICK speed slider.

    NOTE: Don’t set the double-CLICK speed at its fastest setting. It will be too fast to use.

    By selecting the Motion tab, you can change:
    The pointer speed by CLICKing on the Pointer speed slider.

    Mouse trails by CLICKing on the Show pointer trails option button. The length of the trail can be adjusted by CLICKing on the slider.

    1. After you have made the settings, CLICK OK.

    Keeping your System Running Fast

    Using ScanDisk:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer up to Programs, then to Accessories, then to System Tools, then to ScanDisk.
    3. CLICK on ScanDisk.
    4. Move the pointer over the drive which you wish to check - usually C: - CLICK.
    5. Select the Type of test option button - usually Thorough.
    6. CLICK in the Automatically fix errors check box.
    7. CLICK on Start.
    8. When ScanDisk finishes, the ScanDisk Results dialog box appears. This displays the results of the tests and repairs. CLICK on Close.
    9. CLICK on Close to close ScanDisk.

    NOTE: If you did not select Automatically fix errors, you will see a dialog box every time that ScanDisk finds an error.

    Defragmenting a Hard Disk:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer up to Programs, then to Accessories, then to System Tools, then to Disk Defragmenter.
    3. CLICK on Disk Defragmenter.
    4. Move the pointer to the down arrow by the list box. CLICK to display the list of drives.
    5. Move the pointer over the drive which you wish to defragment - usually C: - CLICK.
    6. CLICK on OK.
    7. CLICK on Start.
    8. When the defragmenting process is completed you will see a dialog box which asks if you want to quit the Disk Defragmenter. CLICK on Yes.

    Safeguard Your Work: Backup and Restore

    Starting Microsoft Backup:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer up to Programs, then to Accessories, then to System Tools, then to Backup.
    3. CLICK on Backup.
    4. CLICK on OK.
    5. CLICK on OK again.

    Backing Up Selected Files:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer up to Programs, then to Accessories, then to System Tools, then to Backup.
    3. CLICK on Backup.
    4. CLICK on OK.
    5. CLICK on OK again.
    6. Select the folders and files you wish to backup by CLICKing in the check box to the left of the folder or file name.
    7. CLICK on Next Step>.
    8. CLICK on the destination for the files - usually drive A: or a tape backup device.
    9. To name the group of files you selected, CLICK on File.
    10. Select Save As…
    11. Name the group of files in the File Save As dialog box. NOTE: Once a group of files is named, that named group may be selected in step 6.
    12. CLICK on Save.
    13. Insert a floppy disk in A:.
    14. CLICK on Start Backup.
    15. Enter the name for the backup in the Backup set text box.
    16. CLICK on OK.
    17. When the backup is completed, CLICK on OK in the Operation Complete dialog box.
    18. Close the Microsoft Backup window.

    Restoring Files:

    1. CLICK on Start.
    2. Move the pointer up to Programs, then to Accessories, then to System Tools, then to Backup.
    3. CLICK on Backup.
    4. CLICK on OK.
    5. CLICK on OK again.
    6. CLICK on the Restore tab.
    7. Insert the disk which contains the files you want to restore into the drive.
    8. CLICK on Next Step>.
    9. Select the folders and files you wish to restore by CLICKing in the check box to the left of the folder or file name.
    10. CLICK on the Start Restore button.
    11. A dialog box will tell you that the restoration has finished. CLICK on OK.
    12. Close the Microsoft Backup window.
